Next session: ThursdayHi, my name is Anthony and I am the Walk Leader for Great Ayton. I don’t have much of a story to tell when it comes to the reasons I’ve struggled with my mental health in the past. There's been no obvious triggers, no traumatic life events... just a quiet sadness that sometimes creeps over me, unannounced. I’ve hidden my struggles with my mental heath since being a teenager, from anxiety attacks to bouts of depression. I felt guilty for being sad or lonely when I "didn't have anything to be sad about". What I do know is that I usually struggle with it alone because I never found a way to share my feelings with the people around me. It’s often easier to share your struggles with a stranger than those you love. No matter how supportive our loved ones are, it can be easier to open up if there's no expectation, no pressure to be okay. Or maybe you don't feel like you have anyone to talk to. You feel lonely in a sea of strangers. I want to start a group so that every week, no matter what might have happened (or not happened), you can find people willing to listen or even just be another person to spend some time with for some quiet companionship. It’s very easy to feel isolated and alone so I want to be a friendly face for people who might just need that moment of connection or understanding.
My name is Jason, I'm a local councillor and volunteer when I'm not working as a project manager/SysAdmin/Developer. Keeping busy is important to me. I run a Sunday litter picking group, I volunteer at parkrun on Saturday, and I work in the community with various groups. Being active, breathing in fresh air, getting some daylight, and talking to people are all good for mental health. That's what I want to encourage.
Ash is an Armed forces veteran with a wealth of experience, an award winning welfare officer, mental health advocate, author, motivational speaker and adventurer, Ash works within the mental health field and is a mental health first aider, member of the institute of welfare and has numerous relevant qualifications. Ash is keen to grow the Hereford group and strives to help others with his lived experience of ill mental and physical health. In 2023, Ash became a Director of Men Walking and Talking.
Hi, my name is Mark. I’ve lived in Highley since 2004 and grew up in and around the village. The scenery here is second to none, and it’s always felt like home. Like many men, I’ve been through some tough times myself and know what it’s like to feel low — and to find a way through. That’s why becoming a Walk Leader with Men Walking & Talking means a lot to me. My aim is simple: to help men walk, talk, and feel at ease. To offer empathy, support, and a space where we can look out for each other, especially when life gets difficult.
Hi, my name is Steve and I'm the Walk Leader for Huddersfield. I was inspired to get involved in Men Walking and Talking after seeing some posts on Facebook about the walk in Sandbach (where I grew up). I was immediately taken by the whole concept, and it felt like something I wanted to be a part of. I reached out to enquire about setting up a new walk in Huddersfield, and here we are… Men generally struggle to talk about their mental health, and I am no exception. During my more difficult times, I never felt able to talk about my mental health with anyone, even close friends and family. I never opened up, never sought any professional help, and totally feel the stigma that surrounds it all. I am the epitome of why Men Walking and Talking exists. Well, you know what? It's okay to not be okay. Even if you're a bloke. I still don’t feel comfortable or able to talk openly about my own experiences yet, but I hope to get to a place where I can. I know this group will help me get there, and I know I can help others to do the same. I'm proud to lead the Huddersfield walk and provide a safe space where men have the opportunity to open up and talk about their experiences and emotions with other like-minds. We can talk, we can listen, or we can just be good company for each other. So, come along for a walk, make some new friends, and share your story. Same time, same place, every week.
Hi, my name is Mark and I am the walk leader for the Kenilworth group of MWAT. Having dealt with my own mental health struggles in 2019, I recognise how vitally important groups like this can be. This group has been running since September 2022, meeting every week for a relaxed one hour walk at a steady pace. There’s no agenda, no pressure – just a group of blokes getting together for a stroll and a chat. There is often a perception that if you come along on our walks that you have to talk about your mental health, I can promise you that this isn't the case. Conversation is different every week, sometimes light and cheery and sometimes life's ups and downs. Either way, it’s a supportive, safe space where all men are welcome, whether you want to open up or just enjoy a bit of company. We are very lucky in Kenilworth in that we have some wonderful walking routes that vary through the seasons, walking around Kenilworth Castle and the surrounding fields, a stroll along Kenilworth Greenway or just a wander around the town itself. I work as an engineer in Leamington and enjoy weekends away in my camper van. The outdoors are a huge part of my life and I enjoy hiking and getting into the Mountains of Wales. In December of 2022 I was honoured to be made a Director of Men Walking and Talking. I look forward to seeing you on a walk soon. Thank you
